How to Properly Measure a Room
Are you looking to redo a space in your home and looking for virtual design inspiration? Elegant Interior Designs can help. Part of the process will be to provide photographs and measurements of your space. This can be done with a smartphone or camera. iPhone users can use the Measure App that is installed by default. If you prefer to sketch your room design on graph paper download our graph paper template.
Step 1: Gather Tools and Supplies
Before diving into room measurements, equip yourself with essential tools and supplies. A reliable tape measure, a notebook, and a pencil are your go-to items. If your room has irregular shapes, consider a laser distance measurer for more accurate readings.
Step 2: Establish a Baseline
Start by identifying a baseline – a straight line from which all other measurements will be referenced. Typically, this is the longest and most unobstructed wall in the room. Measure the length of this wall from one end to the other, jotting down the measurement in your notebook. For instance, if the baseline measures 15 feet, note it as “Baseline: 15 feet.”
Step 3: Measure Wall Lengths
Proceed to measure the lengths of the remaining walls, working clockwise or counterclockwise from your baseline. For instance, if the second wall is adjacent to the baseline and measures 10 feet, note it as “Wall 2: 10 feet.” Continue this process until you have measured all the walls.
Step 4: Note Wall Features
Take note of any architectural features or irregularities on each wall, such as doors, windows, or alcoves. Measure their dimensions and distance from the adjacent walls. For example, if a window is 4 feet wide and positioned 2 feet from Wall 3, record it as “Window on Wall 3: 4 feet wide, 2 feet from adjacent wall.” Also, include power outlet locations.
Step 5: Measure Wall Heights
Measure the height of each wall from floor to ceiling. Start at one corner of the room and work your way around. Note variations in ceiling height if applicable, as this information will be crucial for creating an accurate space plan.
Step 6: Account for Room Openings
Measure the width and height of any door openings, including the door itself. Consider the swing direction, especially in smaller spaces where door placement can significantly impact furniture arrangement. Record these measurements as “Door Opening: Width x Height.”
Step 7: Measure Room Features
If your room has built-in features like fireplaces, (include hearth size and location) or built-in shelves, measure their dimensions and their distances from adjacent walls. These details will influence furniture placement and overall spatial planning.
Step 8: Document Ceiling Fixtures
Measure the height of any ceiling fixtures, such as chandeliers or ceiling fans. Note their locations in relation to walls or specific features, as this information will guide lighting placement in your space plan.
Step 9: Double-Check Measurements
To ensure accuracy, double-check critical measurements and compare them against each other. Inconsistencies could indicate errors in your measurements or irregularities in the room.
